Light

Dendrobiums thrive in bright, filtered light — closely resembling the dappled sunlight they receive beneath the rainforest canopy. Position your mounted Dendrobium where it receives gentle early morning sunshine (7–10 am) followed by bright indirect light for the rest of the day.

Avoid: Prolonged harsh afternoon sunshine, especially in hotter regions of Kenya, as this may cause leaf scorching.

Temperature

Ideal daytime temperatures are 20–30°C, with nights at 14–20°C. The slight drop in night temperatures helps encourage flowering in many Dendrobium hybrids. These conditions closely match most parts of Kenya.

Humidity

Ideal humidity is 50–80%. Because TropicalOrchids254 grows these orchids mounted on driftwood, excellent airflow around the roots helps maintain healthy conditions even when humidity fluctuates. In drier regions, increase watering frequency rather than reducing airflow.

Watering

Mounted orchids dry much faster than potted orchids — this is actually one of their greatest advantages. The roots experience a natural wet-dry cycle similar to the rainforest. Healthy roots turn green after watering and silvery-white when dry. Always observe the roots rather than relying solely on a calendar.

How to water: Thoroughly soak roots, cocofibre and surrounding driftwood → allow to drain freely → ensure good airflow after watering. Avoid keeping mounted orchids constantly wet.

Fertilising

Apply NHance Seaweed Fertiliser alternating with NPK FOLIAR - High N, & High K Foliar every week active growth. Benefits include stronger roots, healthy new canes, improved flowering, increased stress tolerance and better overall plant health. Regular feeding produces noticeably stronger orchids over time.

Leaf Care & Pest Prevention

Gently wipe both sides of each leaf approximately once every month using diluted Achook Neem Oil. This removes dust, improves photosynthesis, naturally discourages common pests and keeps the plant looking its best. Always apply during the cooler part of the day.

Air Movement

Good airflow is one of the most overlooked aspects of orchid care. Because Dendrobiums naturally grow high on trees, they constantly experience moving air. Always display mounted orchids where gentle airflow is available — avoid enclosed cabinets or poorly ventilated rooms. Good airflow reduces fungal diseases, encourages healthy roots and allows faster drying after watering.

Mounting Process

At TropicalOrchids254, each piece of natural driftwood is cleaned, sanded and soaked in boiling water for approximately 24 hours to disinfect. The orchid is then positioned naturally on the wood, Kenyan cocofibre is placed around the root system, and biodegradable jute rope secures the plant.

Over the next year, the jute gradually decomposes while the orchid’s roots permanently attach themselves to the driftwood — eventually requiring no support at all. A living orchid growing on wood, exactly as nature intended.

Remounting & Propagation

Mounted orchids do not require traditional repotting — they simply continue attaching themselves more firmly to the driftwood. If the plant eventually outgrows its mount after many years, it can be transferred onto a larger piece while preserving most established roots.

Dendrobiums naturally produce new growths from the base of existing canes and can eventually be divided into multiple healthy plants. Some also produce keikis (baby plants) along their canes, which can be carefully removed once they have developed healthy roots, several leaves and strong growth.

Mealybugs

Symptoms: White cotton-like masses · Sticky leaves · Weak new growth

Treatment: Spray or wipe affected areas with diluted Achook Neem Oil. Repeat weekly until controlled.

Aphids

Symptoms: Curled flower buds · Sticky honeydew · Clusters of green, black or brown insects on young growth

Treatment: Neem Oil is an excellent natural treatment. Apply diluted Achook Neem Oil to affected areas.

Scale Insects

Symptoms: Small brown bumps on leaves or canes · Reduced vigour · Sticky honeydew

Treatment: Remove manually before applying diluted Achook Neem Oil.

Spider Mites

Symptoms: Silvery leaf markings · Fine webbing · Dull foliage

Treatment: Increase humidity and apply regular Neem Oil. More common during hot, dry weather.

Snails & Slugs

Symptoms: Damage to tender flower spikes and new roots · Irregular holes or chewed edges

Treatment: Inspect plants at night if damage appears unexpectedly.

Root Rot & Crown Rot

Symptoms: Soft or black roots · Water trapped in growing point · Foul smell

Prevention: Allow roots to dry naturally after watering. Water early in the morning so plants dry before evening. Mounted orchids significantly reduce root rot compared to pot culture.

Leaf Spot

Symptoms: Black or brown spots on leaves · Expanding lesions

Prevention: Good airflow and avoiding water sitting on leaves overnight. Remove affected tissue and improve ventilation.

My orchid isn’t flowering.

Most likely: insufficient light, too little fertiliser, a young plant or a weak root system. Increase morning light and feed every weekly with NHance Seaweed Fertiliser.

My orchid has wrinkled canes.

Usually indicates dehydration. Increase watering frequency and check that roots are healthy.

The leaves are turning yellow.

Natural ageing of older leaves is normal. If many leaves yellow simultaneously, investigate watering, sunlight and root health.

The roots are silver.

Excellent — healthy orchid roots naturally turn silver-white when dry and green after watering. This is perfectly normal.

The flowers dropped quickly.

Flower drop may result from suddenly moving the plant, heat stress, dehydration or ethylene gas from ripening fruit nearby. Maintain consistent growing conditions.
