Some plants impress with colourful flowers. Others impress with their unusual shape. Tillandsia bulbosa Mini does both.
This fascinating miniature air plant is loved for its swollen bulb-like base, twisting green leaves and exotic appearance that looks almost like a tiny sea creature suspended in the air. Although small in size, it has enormous personality. Its sculptural form makes it one of the most recognisable Tillandsia species and a favourite among collectors who appreciate unusual plants.

Origin and Natural Habitat
Tillandsia bulbosa is native to Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, northern South America and the Caribbean Islands.
In nature it grows attached to tree branches, mangrove trees, rainforest canopies and forest edges. Its roots simply anchor the plant. They do not absorb water or nutrients. Instead, the leaves absorb rainwater, morning dew, humidity and airborne nutrients through microscopic structures called trichomes.
Never plant Tillandsia bulbosa Mini in soil. Display on driftwood, in wire hangers, on desktop holders or as part of Living Art arrangements.
Care Guide
Light
Bright, indirect light with gentle morning sunshine. Avoid harsh afternoon sun behind glass windows.
Temperature
Ideal: 18 to 30 degrees C day / 12 to 22 degrees C night.
Humidity
Ideally 60 to 85 percent. In drier regions increase watering. At the Coast prioritise excellent airflow.

Method 1 - Thorough Spraying (Recommended): Wet every leaf, the swollen bulb, the centre and every side. Do not allow water to remain trapped inside the bulb.
Method 2 - Soaking (Hot weather): Submerge 10 to 15 minutes, shake off excess, hang upside down to drain the bulb, then return to display.
Air Movement
Essential. Because of its swollen bulb, Tillandsia bulbosa needs even better airflow than most Tillandsias. Never display inside a sealed glass terrarium.
Fertilising

Leaf Care
Never polish or wipe the leaves. Allow watering to rinse naturally. Ensure complete drying after each watering.
Display
On natural driftwood, in colourful spiral wire hangers, on driftwood desktop holders, from decorative hooks or as Living Art.
Propagation and Clumping
After flowering, pups develop around the base and remain attached, gradually forming a sculptural colony. Pups may be separated at one third the size of the parent.

Pests and Diseases
Mealybugs
Symptoms: White cotton-like clusters around the bulb, between leaves and around pups. Sticky residue. Slower growth.
Treatment: Diluted Achook Neem Oil. Repeat every 7 days.
Scale Insects
Symptoms: Brown raised bumps. Yellow patches. Reduced vigour.
Treatment: Remove manually then apply Neem Oil.
Spider Mites
Symptoms: Pale foliage. Fine webbing. Reduced growth in hot dry weather.
Treatment: Increase watering slightly while maintaining excellent airflow.
Rot
Prevention: Water in the morning. After soaking, hang upside down to drain the bulb. Ensure good airflow at all times.
Fungal Problems
Prevention: Improve ventilation.
Troubleshooting
My plant looks wrinkled. Increase watering and move to bright indirect light.
My plant is not flowering. Needs more maturity, light or fertiliser.
My leaves are twisting excessively. Dehydration — water more thoroughly.
My plant has stopped growing. Increase light, feed fortnightly, check for pests.
The centre of my bulb is turning black. Internal rot — improve airflow immediately.

"Tillandsia bulbosa Mini is one of those plants that everyone picks up first. People are fascinated by its swollen base and twisting leaves, and they can't believe it grows without soil. Although it's small, it has incredible character. Make sure the plant dries well after watering — because of its bulb shape, trapped water can cause problems if airflow is poor. Give it fresh air, regular watering and a bright position, and it will reward you with beautiful red and purple flowers followed by plenty of pups. Looks like a small octopus.
