Known for its compact rosette of soft green leaves, vibrant pink flower bracts and striking purple flowers, it is one of the most rewarding air plants for beginners and experienced collectors alike.
Unlike many air plants that flower only once before producing a single pup, Tillandsia stricta is an enthusiastic producer of offsets. Over time, one plant gradually develops into a magnificent mature clump, creating a spectacular Living Art display that becomes more impressive every year.

Origin and Natural Habitat
Tillandsia stricta is native to Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina, where it naturally grows attached to tree branches, shrubs, rocks and forest edges. It enjoys bright filtered light, regular rainfall and excellent air circulation.
Its roots simply anchor the plant. They do not absorb water or nutrients. Instead, the leaves absorb rainwater, morning dew, humidity and airborne nutrients through microscopic structures called trichomes. This allows Tillandsia stricta to live entirely without soil.
Care Guide
Light
Tillandsia stricta thrives in bright, indirect light with several hours of gentle morning sunshine. Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun, especially behind glass windows.
Temperature
Ideal: 18 to 30 degrees C day / 12 to 22 degrees C night. Tolerates both Kenya's cooler highlands and warmer coastal climate.
Humidity
Ideally 50 to 80 percent. In drier areas water more frequently. In humid coastal areas prioritise excellent airflow.
Watering
Regular watering but never constantly wet. Always allow the plant to dry completely before watering again.

Method 1 - Thorough Spraying (Recommended): Completely wet every leaf, the centre of the rosette, the base and every side of the display. Allow excess water to drain naturally.
Method 2 - Soaking (Hot weather): Submerge for 10 to 15 minutes, remove, shake off excess, hang upside down for several minutes, then return to display.
Air Movement
Essential at all times. Good airflow prevents rot, reduces fungal problems, dries the plant after watering and encourages stronger growth. Never keep air plants in sealed glass containers without ventilation.
Fertilising
Apply NHance Seaweed Fertiliser every two weeks for stronger growth, more pups, larger clumps, improved flowering and healthier foliage.
Leaf Care
Never polish or aggressively wipe the leaves. Trichomes are delicate. Allow watering to naturally rinse the leaves and maintain good airflow after watering.
Display
Never plant in soil. Display on natural driftwood, inside colourful spiral wire hangers, on driftwood desktop holders, hanging from decorative hooks or as part of Living Art installations.
Propagation and Clumping
After flowering, several pups develop around the base. These remain attached and gradually form a large impressive clump. Every flowering cycle produces new pups, making the plant larger, fuller and more valuable each year. Pups may be separated once they reach approximately one third the size of the parent.

Pests and Diseases
Mealybugs
Symptoms: White cotton-like clusters between leaves, at the base and around pups. Sticky residue. Reduced growth.
Treatment: Spray with diluted Achook Neem Oil. Repeat every 7 days until eliminated.
Scale Insects
Symptoms: Small brown bumps on leaves. Yellow patches. Reduced vigour.
Treatment: Remove manually then apply diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Spider Mites
Symptoms: Fine webbing. Pale leaves. Reduced growth, usually during prolonged dry weather.
Treatment: Increase watering slightly while maintaining excellent air circulation.
Rot
Symptoms: Black centre. Mushy base.
Prevention: Always water in the morning so the plant dries naturally during the day. Ensure good airflow at all times.
Fungal Problems
Prevention: Improving ventilation normally prevents fungal issues caused by high humidity and poor airflow.
Troubleshooting
My plant looks dry. Increase watering frequency and relocate into bright, filtered light away from harsh afternoon sun.
My plant is not flowering. Plant may not have reached maturity, or needs more light and regular fertilising.
My leaves are curling. Slight curling is normal. Excessive curling indicates dehydration. Water more thoroughly.
My plant has stopped growing. Increase light, feed every two weeks with NHance Seaweed Fertiliser and check for pests.
The centre of my plant is black. Crown rot. Remove the affected plant and improve airflow around your collection.
