About Yellow Star Jasmine
Yellow Star Jasmine is one of the most cheerful and rewarding flowering climbers for tropical and subtropical gardens. Loved for its brilliant golden-yellow, star-shaped flowers and vigorous climbing habit, it quickly transforms walls, pergolas, fences and archways into vibrant displays of colour.
Despite its common name, Yellow Star Jasmine is not a true jasmine. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is more closely related to plants such as Allamanda and Mandevilla than to the true jasmines (Jasminum species).

At TropicalOrchids254, Yellow Star Jasmine has become one of our preferred flowering climbers for residential gardens, hotels and commercial landscapes because it flowers generously, grows rapidly and thrives in Kenya's warm climate.
Origin & Natural Habitat
Yellow Star Jasmine originates from tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, where it naturally grows through forests and woodland edges, scrambling over surrounding vegetation while flowering abundantly in sunny conditions.
Its tropical origin makes it perfectly suited to Kenya's warm climate. As it climbs higher into brighter conditions, flowering becomes increasingly abundant.
Why Landscape Designers Love Yellow Star Jasmine
Few climbers produce such a dramatic display of warm colour. Its vibrant yellow flowers contrast beautifully against deep green foliage, creating an eye-catching display that lasts for much of the year.
Landscape architects use it to soften walls, cover fences quickly, create colourful pergolas, frame entrances beautifully, provide vertical colour, attract pollinators and create a tropical atmosphere.
Suraj Shah's Growing Secrets
Yellow Star Jasmine performs best when given plenty of sunshine and a strong structure to climb.
Secret 1 — Sunshine Produces More Flowers
We always plant ours where they receive at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. Plants grown in sunny positions produce more flowers, richer yellow colour, stronger vines, faster coverage and longer flowering seasons.
Secret 2 — Give It Plenty of Room to Climb
Rather than constantly cutting it back, we encourage it to climb over pergolas, arches, fences and walls where it has room to spread. As the vine matures, it develops a much denser canopy and produces increasingly impressive displays of golden flowers.
My Advice: Always plant it in full sun and give it a strong support with plenty of room to climb. Mature vines become spectacular living walls of evergreen foliage covered with brilliant golden-yellow flowers.
Care Guide
Light
Full sun — at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Heavy shade will significantly reduce flowering.
Watering
Newly planted vines: every 3–4 days. Established plants: every 5–7 days depending on rainfall and temperature.
Nairobi / Thika / Kiambu: 4–5 days · Nakuru: 5–6 days · Athi River: 3–4 days · Coast: 5–7 days
Soil
Fertile, free-draining soil. Improve with well-rotted compost, coco peat, worm compost and river sand where drainage is poor.
Feeding
Feed every two weeks during active growth with NHance Seaweed Fertiliser.
Leaf Care
Spray or wipe leaves monthly with diluted Achook Neem Oil to keep them clean, glossy and pest-free.
Climbing Support
Suitable structures: pergolas, garden arches, trellises, decorative fencing, wire systems, gazebos, boundary walls. Guide young shoots onto the support while still flexible.
Pruning
Light pruning after each flowering flush encourages fresh growth. Remove dead stems, weak growth, damaged branches and overcrowded shoots.
Propagation
Semi-hardwood stem cuttings. Remove lower leaves, plant into free-draining mix, keep warm and lightly moist. Roots within several weeks.
Common Pests & Problems
Aphids
Symptoms: Curled new leaves, sticky honeydew, distorted flower buds.
Treatment: Spray with water then treat with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Mealybugs
Symptoms: White cotton-like insects, sticky leaves, weak growth.
Treatment: Remove infested growth and wipe with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Spider Mites
Symptoms: Tiny yellow spots, fine webbing, dull foliage.
Treatment: Increase watering and wipe foliage with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Root Rot
Symptoms: Yellow leaves, wilting, soft stems, blackened roots.
Prevention: Always plant in well-draining soil. Never allow waterlogging.
Poor Flowering
Causes: Too much shade · excess nitrogen · heavy pruning · young plants still establishing.
Solution: Full sun, regular feeding, good drainage, light pruning only.
