Light

Oncidium orchids thrive in bright, filtered light, similar to the dappled sunshine they receive while growing naturally on tree branches. Position your mounted Oncidium where it receives gentle early morning sunshine (7–10 am) followed by bright indirect light for the remainder of the day. This encourages vigorous growth, healthy pseudobulbs and spectacular flowering.

Avoid: Prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun, particularly during the hottest months, as this may scorch the leaves.

Temperature

Oncidiums enjoy warm tropical conditions and adapt very well to much of Kenya. Ideal daytime temperatures are 20–30°C, with nights at 14–20°C. A slight drop in night temperatures helps stimulate flower spike production.

Humidity

Oncidiums appreciate moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–80%. Because TropicalOrchids254 grows these orchids mounted on natural driftwood, the roots enjoy constant airflow while still benefiting from regular watering. This combination keeps the roots healthy and reduces disease.

Watering

Mounted Oncidiums dry faster than orchids grown in pots — one of the reasons they perform so well on driftwood. The roots experience the natural wet-and-dry cycle found in tropical forests. Healthy roots turn green immediately after watering and silver-white when dry. Always observe the roots rather than relying solely on a calendar.

How to water: Thoroughly soak roots, cocofibre and surrounding driftwood → allow to drain freely → ensure good airflow after watering. Never allow mounted orchids to remain constantly wet. Morning watering is always recommended.

Fertilising

One of the reasons TropicalOrchids254 Oncidiums flower so reliably is regular feeding. Apply NHance Seaweed Fertiliser, alternating with NPK FOLIAR - High N, & High K Foliar throughout the active growing season. Benefits include stronger roots, larger pseudobulbs, more flower spikes, longer flowering periods, healthier foliage and improved overall vigour. Consistent feeding produces noticeably larger flowering displays each year.

Leaf Care & Pest Prevention

Once every month, gently wipe both sides of each leaf using diluted Achook Neem Oil. This removes dust, improves photosynthesis, naturally discourages pests and produces glossy healthy foliage. Clean leaves also enhance the appearance of mounted orchids displayed indoors. Always apply during the cooler part of the day.

Air Movement

Excellent airflow is one of the biggest secrets to successful orchid growing. Because Oncidiums naturally grow attached to trees, their roots are constantly surrounded by moving air. Good airflow prevents fungal diseases, dries the roots after watering, produces stronger plants and encourages healthy root growth. Never display mounted orchids in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

Mounting Process

At TropicalOrchids254, each piece of natural driftwood is carefully cleaned, sanded and soaked in boiling water for approximately 24 hours to disinfect. The orchid is then carefully positioned on the wood, sustainable Kenyan cocofibre is placed around the root system, and biodegradable jute rope gently secures the plant.

Within a year, the jute naturally decomposes as the orchid’s own roots permanently attach themselves to the driftwood — eventually supporting itself naturally, exactly as it would in the rainforest.

Remounting & Propagation

Mounted Oncidium orchids rarely require repotting — they simply continue growing on the driftwood. After many years, if the orchid eventually becomes too large, it can be transferred onto a larger piece of driftwood while preserving as many roots as possible.

Oncidiums naturally produce new growth from the base of mature pseudobulbs. As the clump becomes larger it can eventually be divided into multiple healthy plants. Each division should contain several mature pseudobulbs to ensure rapid establishment.

Mealybugs

Symptoms: White cotton-like clusters around leaf bases, pseudobulbs, flower spikes and root junctions · Sticky leaves · Poor new growth

Treatment: Wipe or spray affected areas with diluted Achook Neem Oil. Repeat every 7 days until controlled.

Aphids

Symptoms: Curled flower buds · Sticky honeydew · Small green, black or brown insects on flower spikes, new buds and soft young leaves

Treatment: Achook Neem Oil provides excellent natural control.

Scale Insects

Symptoms: Small brown bumps on leaves, pseudobulbs or flower spikes · Reduced vigour · Sticky honeydew

Treatment: Remove manually before treating with diluted Achook Neem Oil.

Spider Mites

Symptoms: Fine webbing · Silvery leaves · Reduced vigour

Treatment: Increase humidity and apply Achook Neem Oil. More common during prolonged hot and dry weather.

Snails & Slugs

Symptoms: Damage to new flower spikes, fresh roots and young leaves · Irregular holes or chewed edges

Treatment: Inspect plants after dark if damage suddenly appears.

Root Rot & Crown Rot

Symptoms: Soft or discoloured roots · Water trapped around new growth · Foul smell

Prevention: Root rot is uncommon in mounted orchids because roots dry quickly. Poor airflow or continuously wet roots remain the main causes. Always water in the morning to allow plants to dry naturally before evening.

Leaf Spot

Symptoms: Fungal spots on leaves during prolonged wet weather

Prevention: Improve airflow and avoid leaving water sitting on leaves overnight. Remove badly affected tissue.

My Oncidium isn’t flowering.

Most likely: insufficient light, a young plant, lack of fertiliser or weak pseudobulbs. Increase morning light and feed weekly alternating between  NHance Seaweed Fertiliser and NPK FOLIAR - High N, & High K Foliar

My pseudobulbs look wrinkled.

Wrinkled pseudobulbs usually indicate dehydration. Increase watering frequency and check that the roots remain healthy.

The leaves are yellowing.

Older leaves naturally age and fall. If many leaves yellow simultaneously, investigate excessive sunlight, watering, root health or nutrient deficiency.

My flowers didn’t last long.

Possible causes: moving the plant while flowering, heat stress, dehydration or ethylene gas from ripening fruit nearby. Keep flowering plants in a stable environment.
