About Golden Pothos
Few houseplants are as instantly recognisable or as universally loved as Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum). With its cascading vines, heart-shaped leaves and beautiful golden variegation, it has earned a reputation as one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow.
Whether climbing a tree in a tropical garden, cascading from a hanging basket or growing up a coco fibre support pole indoors, Golden Pothos brings lush tropical greenery into any space.
At TropicalOrchids254, Golden Pothos is one of our favourite plants for both indoor styling and landscape projects. When allowed to climb naturally, the leaves become dramatically larger — creating a bold tropical display that is completely different from the small trailing plants commonly sold in garden centres.
Origin & Natural Habitat
Golden Pothos is believed to originate from Mo'orea in French Polynesia, although it has become naturalised throughout tropical regions across Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas.
In the wild, it begins life on the rainforest floor. As soon as it encounters a tree or rock face, it starts climbing using its aerial roots. As it climbs higher into brighter conditions, the plant produces larger leaves, stronger stems, more vigorous growth and increased variegation.
This natural behaviour explains why climbing plants look dramatically different from trailing ones — and why providing a vertical support transforms the plant entirely.
Why It Climbs — and Why It Matters
Golden Pothos is a natural hemiepiphyte. Its aerial roots allow it to attach securely to tree trunks, rock faces, coco fibre poles, moss poles and walls. Climbing enables the plant to reach brighter light without competing on the forest floor.
When grown vertically, Golden Pothos rewards growers with much larger leaves, thicker vines, stronger aerial roots, faster growth and a spectacular tropical appearance. A trailing plant produces relatively small leaves; a climbing plant develops foliage many times larger.
Suraj Shah's Growing Secrets
At TropicalOrchids254, we grow Golden Pothos in two completely different forms depending on where the plant will eventually be displayed.
Secret 1 — Small Leaves for Decorative Displays
When we want a compact, elegant plant for homes, offices, shelves or tabletops, we train Golden Pothos around a circular globe stake. Instead of encouraging the vine to climb vertically, we gently guide it around the circular frame as it grows — creating a dense, rounded plant with small neat leaves, compact growth, excellent branching and a tidy architectural appearance.
Ideal for coffee tables, office desks, apartment living rooms, reception areas and small indoor spaces.
Secret 2 — Large Leaves for a Tropical Statement
When we want spectacular tropical foliage, we grow Golden Pothos on an upright coco fibre support pole. This mimics how the plant naturally climbs trees in the rainforest. As the aerial roots attach to the coco fibre, the plant recognises it is climbing and begins producing progressively larger leaves — developing much larger foliage, thicker vines, stronger aerial roots and a bold tropical appearance.
This is the form we use for hotels, luxury homes, interior landscaping, shopping centres, restaurants and office lobbies.
My Advice: Grow Golden Pothos on a circular globe stake if you want a compact, decorative plant with dense, small foliage perfect for homes and offices. Grow it on an upright coco fibre support pole if you want large, mature leaves and a dramatic tropical feature plant.
Many people are surprised to learn that both the small-leaf and giant-leaf plants are exactly the same species — the dramatic difference comes entirely from how they are trained and supported.
Care Guide
Light
Bright indirect light is ideal. Golden Pothos tolerates lower light levels but grows more slowly and loses some of its golden variegation. Protect from intense afternoon sun, which causes brown patches and bleached leaves.
Watering
Water approximately every 3–5 days as the growing medium begins to dry. Allow the top few centimetres to dry before watering again. Never leave the pot standing in water — overwatering is the most common cause of problems.
Feeding
Feed regularly with NHance Seaweed Fertiliser to support vigorous growth and healthy foliage.
Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years, or sooner if root-bound. Move to a pot only one size larger to prevent excessive moisture retention.
Pruning
Golden Pothos responds extremely well to pruning, which encourages bushier growth and more branching. Remove dead leaves, yellow foliage and damaged stems. Healthy stem cuttings can be rooted to produce new plants.
Common Pests & Problems
Golden Pothos is one of the toughest tropical foliage plants available. Most problems are caused by overwatering, poor drainage, insufficient light or pests. Routine inspection and preventative care will keep it healthy for many years.
Spider Mites
Symptoms: Tiny yellow speckles, fine webbing beneath foliage, dull leaves, brown edges.
Treatment: Wipe both sides of leaves with diluted Achook Neem Oil once every month and increase humidity.
Mealybugs
Symptoms: White cotton-like clusters, sticky honeydew, distorted new leaves.
Treatment: Remove visible insects then wipe thoroughly with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Scale Insects
Symptoms: Brown raised bumps, sticky residue, yellowing foliage.
Treatment: Remove scales carefully and wipe affected areas with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Root Rot
Symptoms: Yellow leaves, soft stems, black or brown roots, bad smell, wilting despite wet soil.
Prevention: Always grow in a free-draining mix and never leave the pot standing in water.
Overwatering
Symptoms: Yellow leaves, soft stems, drooping foliage, black roots, mushy growing medium.
Allow the growing medium to begin drying before watering again.
Growing Golden Pothos in Kenya
Golden Pothos grows exceptionally well throughout Kenya — from Nairobi's cool highlands to the warm, humid coast.
Excellent growing areas: Nairobi · Kiambu · Limuru · Thika · Athi River · Naivasha · Nakuru · Eldoret · Nanyuki
Coastal growing: Mombasa · Diani · Kilifi · Watamu · Malindi — the warm temperatures and naturally humid coastal climate encourage rapid climbing growth and exceptionally large leaves.
