Why Aroids Are Different

Most tropical aroids are hemiepiphytes — they begin life on the forest floor before climbing trees using powerful aerial roots. As they ascend, their leaves become dramatically larger, developing the deep splits and fenestrations that make species like Monstera so iconic.

At TropicalOrchids254, this insight shapes how we grow. We mount and support our aroids on coco fibre poles and natural driftwood, allowing aerial roots to establish exactly as they would in the wild — creating extraordinary pieces of Living Art.

Growing Aroids in Kenya

Kenya’s varied climate — from Nairobi’s cool highlands to the humid coast — offers excellent conditions for most tropical aroids. Our guides include region-specific advice for Nairobi, Kiambu, Limuru, Thika, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa, Diani, Kilifi, Malindi and Watamu, because the same plant may need slightly different care depending on where it is grown.
