About White Splash Pothos
White Splash Pothos is one of the most refined members of the pothos family. Its elongated, heart-shaped leaves are decorated with striking splashes and streaks of creamy white, silver and deep green, creating a clean, sophisticated appearance that suits both modern interiors and tropical landscapes.
Unlike varieties with heavily marbled foliage, White Splash Pothos often displays crisp white brushstroke-like markings that follow the centre of the leaf, giving every vine an elegant and distinctive character.
At TropicalOrchids254, we grow White Splash Pothos in two completely different forms. Compact plants trained on circular globe stakes create sculptural decorative displays, while plants grown on upright coco fibre support poles develop progressively larger foliage with a dramatic climbing habit.
Origin & Natural Habitat
White Splash Pothos is a cultivated selection of Epipremnum aureum developed for its distinctive white and silver variegation. The parent species originates from Mo’orea, French Polynesia, where it naturally climbs trees beneath the rainforest canopy.
Although White Splash is a cultivated variety, it follows the same natural growth pattern as its parent species — young plants begin life near the forest floor before climbing trees using aerial roots. As they climb towards brighter filtered light, they produce larger leaves, stronger stems, more vigorous growth and better variegation.
Why It Climbs — and Why It Matters
White Splash Pothos is naturally a climbing plant. Its aerial roots attach themselves to tree trunks, coco fibre poles, moss poles, timber posts, decorative trellises and stone surfaces. Climbing allows the plant to reach brighter light while encouraging larger, more mature foliage.
Growing White Splash vertically recreates this natural rainforest behaviour and transforms the plant entirely.
Suraj Shah’s Growing Secrets
At TropicalOrchids254, we grow White Splash Pothos in two completely different forms depending on where the plant will eventually be displayed.
Secret 1 — Small Leaves for Decorative Displays
When we want a compact, elegant plant for homes, offices, shelves or tabletops, we train White Splash Pothos around a circular globe stake. Instead of encouraging the vine to climb vertically, we gently guide it around the circular frame as it grows — creating a dense, rounded plant with small neat leaves, compact growth, excellent branching and a tidy architectural appearance. Ideal for coffee tables, office desks, apartment living rooms, reception areas and small indoor spaces.
Secret 2 — Large Leaves for a Tropical Statement
When we want spectacular tropical foliage, we grow White Splash Pothos on an upright coco fibre support pole. As the aerial roots attach to the coco fibre, the plant recognises it is climbing and begins producing progressively larger leaves — developing much larger foliage, thicker vines, stronger aerial roots and a bold tropical appearance. This is the form we use for hotels, luxury homes, interior landscaping, shopping centres, restaurants and office lobbies.
My Advice: Grow White Splash on a circular globe stake for a compact, decorative plant with dense, small foliage perfect for homes and offices. Grow it on an upright coco fibre support pole for large, mature leaves and a dramatic tropical feature plant. Both forms are exactly the same cultivar — the dramatic difference comes entirely from how they are trained and supported.
Care Guide
Light
Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the crisp white variegation. Plants grown in bright filtered light produce brighter white markings, larger leaves and stronger vines. Insufficient light causes the white markings to fade as the leaves produce more green chlorophyll. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which causes brown patches and bleached foliage on the lighter portions of the leaves.
Watering
Water approximately every 3–5 days as the growing medium begins to dry. Allow the top few centimetres to dry before watering again. Never allow the pot to stand in water.
Nairobi / Kiambu / Thika: every 3–5 days · Limuru / Eldoret / Nanyuki: every 4–5 days · Athi River: every 3–4 days · Coast (Mombasa, Diani, Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi): every 3–5 days depending on rainfall
Growing Medium
Grow in a loose, airy mix of coco chips, coco peat, orchid bark, perlite, charcoal and worm compost. This provides excellent drainage, healthy root aeration and reduced risk of root rot. Avoid heavy soils that remain wet for long periods.
Feeding
Feed every two weeks during active growth with NHance Seaweed Fertiliser. Regular feeding supports faster growth, larger leaves, stronger roots, brighter white variegation and improved resilience.
Leaf Care
Wipe both sides of the leaves monthly with diluted Achook Neem Oil. This keeps the foliage clean, improves photosynthesis, adds a natural shine and reduces pest problems. Dust is particularly noticeable on the white portions of the leaves, making routine cleaning especially worthwhile.
Humidity
Ideal humidity is 50–80%. Higher humidity encourages larger foliage, better white variegation, healthy aerial roots and reduced browning of white leaf margins. Coastal Kenya naturally provides excellent humidity. In Nairobi, group tropical plants together or mist occasionally during dry periods.
Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years, or sooner if root-bound. Choose a pot only one size larger to prevent excessive moisture retention.
Propagation
Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Each cutting should contain one healthy node, one leaf and one aerial root if available. Root in water, coco chips, perlite or sphagnum moss. Once roots have developed, transplant into a free-draining growing medium and provide climbing support from an early stage.
Common Pests & Problems
White Splash Pothos is a hardy tropical climbing plant. Most problems result from incorrect watering, insufficient light or poor airflow. Regular inspection and preventative care will keep it healthy for many years.
Spider Mites
Symptoms: Tiny yellow speckles, fine webbing beneath foliage, dull leaves, brown edges.
Treatment: Wipe both sides of leaves with diluted Achook Neem Oil once every month and increase humidity.
Mealybugs
Symptoms: White cotton-like clusters, sticky honeydew, distorted new growth.
Treatment: Remove visible insects then wipe thoroughly with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Scale Insects
Symptoms: Brown raised bumps, sticky residue, yellowing leaves.
Treatment: Remove scales carefully and wipe affected areas with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Root Rot
Symptoms: Yellow leaves, soft stems, brown or black roots, unpleasant smell, wilting despite wet growing medium.
Prevention: Grow in a free-draining tropical mix and never allow water to remain standing around the roots. Healthy roots should always be firm and cream to white in colour.
Sunburn
Symptoms: Brown patches, burnt white sections, crispy leaf edges, bleached foliage.
Prevention: Provide bright indirect light or gentle morning sunshine. The white portions contain less chlorophyll and are more sensitive to direct sunlight.
