Origin & Natural Habitat
Silver Leaf Philodendron is native to the tropical rainforests of Bolivia, Brazil, Peru and parts of western South America. In nature it grows beneath dense rainforest canopies where it climbs trees using aerial roots while receiving filtered sunlight throughout the day.
Climbing encourages larger leaves, thicker stems, stronger aerial roots and faster growth. Growing Silver Leaf Philodendron vertically recreates this natural rainforest behaviour.

Silver Leaf Philodendron is one of those plants that quietly captures people’s attention. Customers often stop when they notice the unusual metallic silver markings shimmering across its leaves. The first question is almost always: “Is that natural?” Yes — it is.
Secret 1 — Growing a Full Cascading Display
When growing for hanging displays or kokedamas, we encourage multiple growing points so the plant develops numerous cascading stems instead of only a few long runners. As the vines mature, they become densely covered with silver-patterned heart-shaped leaves, creating a graceful waterfall of foliage. Perfect for hanging kokedamas, shelves, plant stands, apartment balconies, coffee tables and office displays.
Secret 2 — Growing Giant Silver Leaves
Many people never realise how dramatically Silver Leaf Philodendron changes when allowed to climb. At TropicalOrchids254, we grow it on upright coco fibre support poles. As the aerial roots attach naturally, the plant begins producing much larger leaves, thicker vines, stronger aerial roots, more defined silver markings and a mature rainforest appearance. Visitors are often surprised to discover the elegant trailing plant and the giant climbing specimen are exactly the same species.
My Advice: For a luxurious cascading display, encourage multiple growing points so the plant becomes dense and full. For the largest and most impressive leaves, grow Silver Leaf Philodendron on an upright coco fibre support pole — once the aerial roots begin climbing, the leaves become progressively larger and develop a bold tropical character.
Care Guide
Light
Bright indirect light produces brighter silver markings, larger leaves, better leaf contrast and stronger stems. Too little light causes the silver patterning to become less distinct. Avoid harsh afternoon sun and deep shade.
Watering
Water approximately every 3–5 days as the growing medium begins to dry. Allow the upper few centimetres to dry before watering again. Never allow the roots to remain waterlogged.
Nairobi / Kiambu / Thika: every 3–5 days · Limuru / Eldoret / Nanyuki: every 4–5 days · Athi River: every 3–4 days · Coast (Mombasa, Diani, Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi): every 3–5 days depending on rainfall
Growing Medium
Grow in a loose, airy mix of coco chips, coco peat, orchid bark, perlite, charcoal and worm compost. Avoid compact garden soils that remain wet for long periods.
Feeding
Feed every two weeks during active growth with NHance Seaweed Fertiliser. Benefits include faster growth, larger leaves, stronger roots, better silver colouring and more vigorous vines.
Leaf Care
Wipe both sides of the leaves monthly with diluted Achook Neem Oil. Keeps foliage clean, improves photosynthesis, adds a natural shine and reduces pest problems. Clean leaves allow the beautiful silver markings to reflect light at their best.
Humidity
Ideal humidity is 50–80%. The Kenyan coast naturally provides ideal humidity. In Nairobi and other inland regions, group plants together or mist occasionally during dry weather.
Repotting & Propagation
Repot every 2–3 years, or when root-bound. Propagate from stem cuttings — one healthy node, one leaf and one aerial root if available. Root in water, coco chips, perlite or sphagnum moss. Once roots develop, transplant into a free-draining tropical growing medium and provide climbing support.
Common Pests & Problems
Silver Leaf Philodendron is a resilient tropical plant. Most issues arise from environmental conditions rather than serious diseases.
Spider Mites
Symptoms: Tiny yellow/pale speckles, fine webbing beneath leaves, dull silver markings, brown edges.
Treatment: Wipe both sides of leaves with diluted Achook Neem Oil monthly and increase humidity.
Mealybugs
Symptoms: White cotton-like clusters, sticky honeydew, curled new growth.
Treatment: Remove visible insects then wipe thoroughly with diluted Achook Neem Oil.
Root Rot
Symptoms: Yellow leaves, soft stems, brown or black roots, unpleasant smell.
Prevention: Use a well-draining tropical growing medium. Never allow the plant to sit in water. Healthy roots should always be cream or white and firm.
Sunburn
Symptoms: Brown patches, bleached silver markings, crispy leaf edges.
Prevention: Provide bright indirect light or gentle morning sun. Avoid intense afternoon sunshine.
