Introduction

Among all air plants, few are as charming and distinctive as Tillandsia funkiana. With its slender green leaves, unusual upright growth and brilliant scarlet-red tubular flowers, T. funkiana is one of the very few air plants that naturally produces striking red blooms.

Unlike larger statement Tillandsias, funkiana creates its beauty through numbers. As it matures, it continuously produces offsets (pups), gradually developing into dense clumps that become increasingly spectacular every year. When several plants within a mature clump flower together, the display becomes truly extraordinary.

At TropicalOrchids254, we grow our Tillandsia funkiana naturally until they develop into healthy mature clusters before carefully displaying them on driftwood, decorative wire displays or as part of our handcrafted Living Art collections. Because it thrives across virtually all regions of Kenya — from Nairobi to Mombasa — it is one of our favourite beginner-friendly air plants.

Scientific Classification

Kingdom Plantae
Order Poales
Family Bromeliaceae
Subfamily Tillandsioideae
Genus Tillandsia
Species T. funkiana

Tillandsia funkiana belongs to the Bromeliad family, making it a distant relative of the pineapple. Like all Tillandsias, it has evolved to live without soil — instead of developing underground roots, the plant anchors itself to trees while collecting moisture and nutrients from rainfall, humidity and dust carried through the air. Its unique bright red flowers have made it one of the most recognisable species among air plant collectors.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Tillandsia funkiana originates from Venezuela, where it naturally grows attached to tree branches, shrubs and rocky outcrops. It survives without soil by absorbing water and nutrients directly through its specialised leaves.

In nature its roots serve only one purpose: to anchor the plant. They do not absorb water or nutrients. Instead, the leaves perform almost all of the plant’s water absorption through microscopic structures called trichomes — tiny scales that absorb rainwater, morning dew, humidity, nutrients and dust particles from the air.

This remarkable adaptation allows Tillandsia funkiana to thrive without ever growing in soil, and gives endless creative display possibilities.

Care Guide

Light

Tillandsia funkiana thrives in bright, indirect light with a few hours of gentle morning sunshine. In nature it grows attached to tree branches where it receives filtered sunlight beneath the forest canopy. Position where it receives early morning sunshine followed by bright indirect light throughout the day with excellent air circulation.

Avoid: Prolonged harsh afternoon sun, particularly behind glass windows where temperatures become extremely high.

Temperature

Tillandsia funkiana is remarkably adaptable and performs well across most of Kenya. Ideal daytime temperatures are 18–30°C, with nights at 12–22°C.

It tolerates both the cooler highland regions and the warmer coastal climate exceptionally well — one of the key reasons it is recommended for beginners throughout Kenya.

Humidity

Tillandsia funkiana enjoys humidity but is surprisingly adaptable, ideally 50–80%. It performs well in both Nairobi’s relatively dry climate and Kenya’s humid coastal regions. Regular watering easily compensates for lower humidity.

Watering

Tillandsia funkiana enjoys regular watering but should never remain constantly wet. Allow the plant to experience a natural wet-and-dry cycle — healthy air plants should dry completely within a few hours after watering. Watering frequency depends primarily on humidity.

Region Recommendation
Nairobi / Thika / Athi River / Nakuru / Eldoret / Nanyuki / Limuru / Kiambu Daily — extra misting during dry or windy weather
Mombasa / Diani / Kilifi / Malindi / Watamu / Vipingo Every alternate day — higher humidity naturally reduces moisture loss

Method 1 — Thorough Spraying (Recommended): Using a spray bottle, completely wet all leaves, the centre of the plant and every side of the clump. Allow excess water to drip away.

Method 2 — Soaking (Occasional, especially in hot weather): Submerge the entire plant in clean water for 10–15 minutes → remove → shake off excess water → hang upside down for a few minutes to drain → return to display only once excess water has drained. It is always better to water thoroughly and allow the plant to dry than to keep it constantly damp.

Fertilising

Healthy air plants benefit from occasional feeding. Apply NHance Seaweed Fertiliser by spraying lightly every two weeks. Benefits include faster growth, larger clumps, increased flowering, healthier foliage and stronger pups. Regular feeding produces noticeably larger colonies over time.

Leaf Care

Unlike many houseplants, Tillandsia leaves should not be wiped. Their surface is covered with delicate trichomes which absorb moisture and nutrients from the air — wiping aggressively may damage these structures. Instead: rinse occasionally during watering, remove dead leaves from the base of the clump, and ensure good airflow after watering.

Air Movement

Air circulation is one of the most important requirements for healthy air plants. Good airflow dries the leaves after watering, prevents rot, improves plant health, encourages stronger growth and produces healthier flowers. Never leave an air plant in an enclosed glass container without ventilation.

Display — No Soil Required

One of the biggest mistakes people make is planting air plants into soil. Tillandsia funkiana should never be planted. Because the roots only anchor the plant, no growing medium is required — giving endless styling possibilities.

Simply place on driftwood, inside our colourful spiral wire hangers, on driftwood desktop holders, hanging from decorative displays or inside Living Art arrangements.

Propagation & Clumping

Tillandsia funkiana naturally reproduces by producing pups. After flowering, the mother plant gradually produces several baby plants around its base. These pups remain attached, eventually forming beautiful mature clumps.

Individual pups can also be separated once they reach approximately one-third the size of the parent plant. At TropicalOrchids254, we specialise in mature clumps — large healthy clusters that produce multiple flowering plants while creating an extraordinary Living Art display. Each year the clump becomes larger and more valuable.

Growing Tillandsia funkiana in Kenya

One of the reasons we recommend Tillandsia funkiana so often is its exceptional adaptability. Unlike most orchids, it performs excellently throughout all regions of Kenya — highlands and coast alike.

Excellent — Highlands Nairobi · Thika · Kiambu · Limuru · Athi River · Nakuru · Eldoret · Nanyuki
Excellent — Coast Mombasa · Diani · Kilifi · Watamu · Malindi · Vipingo

Good news for coastal customers: Unlike most orchids, Tillandsia funkiana thrives in Kenya’s warm, humid coastal climate. It is one of our top recommendations for Mombasa, Diani, Kilifi and the wider coast region.

Pests & Diseases

Mealybugs

Symptoms: White cotton-like masses between leaves, around the base and inside mature clumps · Sticky residue · Slower growth

Treatment: Spray with diluted Achook Neem Oil. Repeat every 7 days until no pests remain.

Scale Insects

Symptoms: Small brown bumps firmly attached to leaves · Yellowing leaves · Reduced growth

Treatment: Remove manually before applying diluted Achook Neem Oil.

Spider Mites

Symptoms: Fine webbing · Pale leaves · Reduced vigour

Treatment: Increase watering slightly while maintaining excellent airflow. More common during prolonged dry weather.

Snails

Symptoms: Damage to young leaves on outdoor displays

Treatment: Remove manually when discovered.

Rot

Symptoms: Black centre · Mushy base · Foul smell

Prevention: The biggest risk for air plants. Caused by poor airflow, water trapped inside the plant or constantly wet conditions. Always allow the plant to dry completely after watering. Remove affected plants immediately from mature clumps to prevent spread.

Fungal Problems

Symptoms: Discolouration or spotting caused by poor ventilation or excessive humidity without airflow

Prevention: Increasing air circulation usually prevents fungal problems. Tillandsia funkiana rarely suffers from disease when provided with good airflow and correct watering.

Troubleshooting

My air plant looks dry.

Possible causes: not enough watering, very low humidity or excessive direct sun. Increase watering frequency and move the plant into bright indirect light.

My plant isn’t flowering.

Possible reasons: plant is still immature, insufficient light or lack of fertiliser. Healthy mature plants naturally flower once they reach maturity.

My leaves are curling.

Leaves curling inward usually indicate dehydration. Water more thoroughly and monitor humidity.

My plant has stopped growing.

Growth naturally slows during cooler weather. If growth remains poor: increase light, feed every two weeks and check for pests.

The centre of my plant is black.

This usually indicates rot. Remove the affected plant immediately to prevent it affecting neighbouring plants in mature clumps.

Suraj’s Growing Notes

“If someone wants their very first air plant, Tillandsia funkiana is always one of my recommendations. It’s incredibly forgiving, adapts well almost anywhere in Kenya and rewards you with brilliant red flowers that surprise people who think all air plants look the same.

The real beauty comes with time. Every year the plant produces more pups, gradually forming dense clumps that become more valuable and more impressive. I love displaying mature funkiana on driftwood or in our colourful spiral hangers because they truly become living sculptures.

It’s proof that some of the smallest plants can make the biggest impact.”
