Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light with several hours of gentle morning sunshine. In nature it grows high on tree branches where it enjoys bright filtered light, excellent airflow and regular tropical rainfall.

Avoid: Prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun, especially behind glass, where excessive heat may scorch the leaves.

Temperature

Ideal daytime temperatures are 18–30°C, with nights at 12–22°C. Performs exceptionally well throughout both Kenya's cool highlands and warm coastal regions.

Humidity

Ideally 50–80%. Adapts well to a wide range of conditions. One of its clever adaptations is its ability to curl its leaves during dry periods, reducing water loss until humidity increases again.

Watering

Enjoys regular watering but must always dry completely afterwards. One of the fascinating characteristics of this species is that the leaves naturally respond to moisture — the curls begin relaxing after watering and tighten again as the plant dries. This is completely normal.

Method 1 — Thorough Spraying (Recommended): Completely wet every leaf, the centre of the rosette, both sides of the plant and the base. Allow excess water to drain naturally.

Method 2 — Soaking (Hot/dry weather): Submerge in clean water for 10–15 minutes, remove, shake off excess water, place upside down for several minutes to drain, then return to display once excess moisture has drained.

Air Movement

Fresh air is one of the most important requirements. Good airflow prevents rot, reduces fungal diseases, dries the leaves after watering, encourages healthy flowering and maintains compact growth. Never display inside sealed glass containers.

Fertilising

Apply NHance Seaweed Fertiliser every two weeks. Benefits include faster growth, larger rosettes, improved flowering, more vigorous pup production and richer foliage colour.

Leaf Care

Remove dry leaves from the base when necessary. Never polish the leaves or rub away the silvery trichomes — the natural silver coating helps protect the plant from sunlight and assists with water absorption.

Display — No Soil Required

Should never be planted in soil. Display on natural driftwood, in colourful spiral wire hangers, on handcrafted driftwood desktop holders, hanging from decorative hooks, mounted in Living Art installations or combined with orchids and other Tillandsias.

Propagation & Clumping

Naturally produces pups after flowering. Pups may be separated once they reach approximately one-third the size of the parent, but leaving them attached creates fuller and more valuable Living Art displays that become increasingly impressive over time.

Flowering

Healthy mature plants develop a large pink branched flower spike, from which emerge elegant violet-purple tubular flowers. The colourful flower spike often remains attractive for several weeks, making flowering specimens particularly spectacular.

After flowering, the plant begins producing pups, ensuring the display continues for many years.

Mealybugs

Symptoms: White cotton-like masses between tightly curled leaves, around the base of the rosette and near developing pups · Sticky residue · Yellowing leaves · Slower growth

Treatment: Spray thoroughly with diluted Achook Neem Oil, paying particular attention to the spaces deep within the curled foliage. Repeat every 7 days until the infestation has been eliminated.

Scale Insects

Symptoms: Brown raised bumps · Yellow patches · Reduced vigour

Treatment: Remove manually before applying diluted Achook Neem Oil.

Spider Mites

Symptoms: Fine webbing · Dull silver foliage · Dry-looking leaf tips

Treatment: Increase watering slightly while maintaining excellent air circulation.

Snails & Slugs

Symptoms: Damage to young leaves, flower spikes and developing pups on outdoor displays

Treatment: Inspect plants regularly after rainfall and remove manually.

Crown Rot

Symptoms: Soft or mushy centre · Foul smell · Collapsing leaves

Prevention: The most common issue for this species. Always water in the morning and allow the plant to dry completely before evening. After soaking, gently shake the plant and place it upside down for several minutes to drain any excess water from the crown.

Fungal Problems

Symptoms: Discolouration associated with poor ventilation, constant moisture or dark growing conditions

Prevention: Increasing airflow usually resolves the issue.

My leaves are curling tightly.

This is completely normal — one of the defining characteristics of T. streptophylla. The leaves naturally curl tighter as the plant dries and relax after watering. This natural movement is one of the species' most fascinating adaptations.

My leaves stay straight.

Young plants often have less pronounced curls. As the plant matures, the leaves gradually become thicker and develop the elegant spirals that make the Shirley Temple Air Plant so famous.

My plant looks wrinkled.

Possible causes: dehydration, low humidity or prolonged heat. Increase watering frequency slightly while maintaining bright indirect light.

My plant isn't flowering.

Possible reasons: plant has not yet reached maturity, insufficient light or lack of regular fertiliser. Healthy mature plants naturally flower before producing pups.

My plant has produced pups.

Excellent! This is a sign your plant is thriving. Leaving the pups attached creates larger, fuller and more valuable mature clumps over time.
